Thanks to all who responded. Stuart Saxon, Tim Bradshaw, Peter van Gemert, Dale Whittemore. It seems i've just mis-interpreted the man page -a section. The -a will show output of devices if they are not faulty, but only if they have had a fault in the past. If i run fmadm faulty -a and i have had no faults since server build then nothing will be shown.
