Thanks for all your input.  I think a reasonable summary is that 
although the documentation says it's not supported, if you're up to date 
with the firmware you might get away with it, but no-one in their right 
mind would risk it.  In theory you can bodge the buttons inside to 
offline the board and /usr/platform/SUNW,Sun-Fire-V890/lib/sf880drd 
should spot the fact and migrate everything off there to allow you to 
pull the board.  If you've made up with your favorite deity.

Anyway, scheduled downtime it is.
