Hi,

Thanks to all who sent advice. It looks as though there are a few
options for hardware and most everyone uses cdrw which burns DVDs with
later versions of Solaris. I haven't had a chance to check out the
different recommended links yet, but I'm including them so that people
can explore. I got a lot of good advice from a lot of people, so
thanks to

David Foster
Rich Teer
Daniel
Musa Williams
Nick Howells
mdkz57@ukgateway.net
and Mike McShane

Rich and Mike suggested using an IDE DVD burner (Mike suggested LG DVD
Model # GSA-4163BK) and then using mkisofs and cdrw
which comes with Solaris.

-----------------------------

David recommends Pioneer A08 with a IDE/SCSI converter and has written
some notes describing in pretty good detail the entire procedure.
Here is the link that he sends with his response:

General Reference: ftp://ftp.fokus.gmd.de/pub/unix/cdrecord/ProDVD

He recommends the following hardware:

Pioneer A05 DVD-R/DVD-RW ATAPI Internal -- or --
   Plextor PX-708A Internal ATAPI

------------------------------

Nick suggests XCDROAST, available via CSW at blastwave.org

-------------------------------

Musa recommends the following link:

http://www.unixhub.com/docs/misc/DVD.html

---------------------------------

and finally, mdkz57@ukgateway.net writes:

I have a Sun Blade 100, but with Solaris 9/04 installed with a cdrw
command
that supports DVD's.

Also attached is an Addonics 4-port USB 2.0 PCI card, to which I attach
a
Pioneer DVR-107 DVD burner (not dual-layer) fitted in a cheap USB
2.0/Firewire
enclosure. Works fine in Solaris - lets me burn bootable DVD's with
flash
images embedded in them etc.

The solution lets me move the burner from the Blade 100, to my
PowerBook,
and to my wife's Dell laptop.
