Thanks to all the people who replied, Andy Lee asked me to try ping -ns This worked, apparently solaris 10 will not ping unless it can do a reverse DNS on the ip. The strange thing is, the firewall was also the default gateway, and tcpdump did not show any traffic to the DNS servers. Stranger still is that I could ping systems on the same hub which were not in hosts or DNS.
