This is another case of RTFM I'm afraid.. Thanks to Markus Mayer who suggested I use the command #gzip -dc web-logs.gz > weblogs.log This recovered most of the data... Also thanks to Allan West for suggesting that it may be a problem with the sun version of gzip v's GNU gzip...
