Got a couple of replies. The errors I got in /var/adm/messages (paste them into google) are apparently generic scsi timeout messages that could occur for any one of a large number of reasons from disk drives to tape drives to termination. In my case, I had done everything quite carefully, the E250 has internal connectors already configured for the slot I put the drive into with termination already taken care of. My thoughts had been along the lines of drivers or dip switches. [Sheepishly] The solution was to put a cleaning tape into the drive and try again. Even though the drive was "brand new" in the sense that it had never been opened and was still sealed inside the shipping box, it had been sitting on the shelf for an unknown length of time -- possibly as long as 2 years and not in a controlled environment. There may have been some corrosion buildup over that time. I should have tried that before emailing the list, but I couldn't find a cleaning tape at the time, and neither the lights on the front nor the errors in /var/adm/messages indicated misreadings or the need of cleaning. I was also told that the cleaning tape also "resets" some things in the drive that might have made a difference. Not sure what that means, but it may have been a factor. --------------- Chris Hoogendyk - O__ ---- Systems Administrator c/ /'_ --- Biology Department (*) \(*) -- 140 Morrill Science Center ~~~~~~~~~~ - University of Massachusetts, Amherst <hoogendyk@bio.umass.edu> --------------- Chris Hoogendyk wrote: > I'm setting up an E250.
