The file systems had mount points on a bad file system that had unreadable sectors. I'd mounted it and all the others elsewhere on the system, but for some reason these particular file systems weren't happy with that arrangement. When I newfs'ed the mount point for all these others (/data) and recreated all the mount points, I was able to fsck and mount these troubled filesystems. Thanks for all who helped.
