Summary update: The problem was produced by not using the S10-supplied flex-2.5.4 (installed in /usr/swf/bin), but using the flex-2.5.31 from sunfreeware.com. It looks as the newer flex is broken or incompatbible with apache-1.3.33/mod_ssl-2.8.22. In other words: don't use the sunfreeware.com flex-2.5.31 if you have trouble compiling apache/mod_ssl.
