Thanks a lot to Kelly Ormsby's help..also thanks to all the "out of office emails" =) I figured out the problem after running automount in debug mode.... The problem was due to the use of virtual hostnames (multiple hostnames/IP addresses). TCP had a problem binding to the correct IP address.
