Summary: Inetd service - rpc.smserverd

Thanks to all the guys who replied.
My initial question:
I am hardening my
system and in the process blocking most of the services
>in inetd.conf. I see
the the following service and I am confused whether

It's for vold; note that services specified as above are not
remotely
callable.

The solaris FAQ says:

5.87) After upgrading to Solaris 9 vold no
longer mounts CDs.

   Starting with Solaris 9, vold requires an RPC service
in inetd.conf:

   100155/1 tli rpc/ticotsord wait root
/usr/lib/smedia/rpc.smserverd \
    rpc.smserverd

   Note that rpc/ticotsord
services are not reachable from the network
   so even if it had a security
hole it would not be remotely
   exploitable.

	This is used by vold.  If you don't care about automatically
mounted
removable media (ie: cd-rom, dvd-rom), then you can safely comment it
out
in /etc/inetd.conf.

According to my inetd.conf :
# smserverd to support removable media devices
#100155/1       tli     rpc/ticotsord   wait    root
/usr/lib/smedia/rpc.smserverd rpc.smserverd

I have had it commented out since
I first installed the machine and
haven't noticed anything valuable missing. I
think it is for smart
media devices (perhaps smart card or sd card).

you can remove the service
rpc.smserverd depending on your installation. I think this can be useful
for
you.
