I think there were 15 respondents at last count, nearly all of whom agreed that syslog-ng is the way to do this "sort by originating host" on a central syslog machine. I've got it installed and configured, it's working just fine. Now all I have to do is get swatch compiled to watch the resulting files, and that means getting all the perl modules it needs to compile, and that's turning out to be really annoying, but that's another topic. -- Andrew F. Setting up the client machines to forward a copy of all their messages to it with *.* @LOGHOSTNAME in syslog.conf is working - I restarted syslogd and inetd on the LOGHOST-to-be, then generated a few messages from one of the clients, and got the messages in /var/adm/messages. So, now, to rehash a question I've seen many times, but never seen a SUMMARY for, can I get my logserver to direct messages from specific clients into either separate files or different directories, using the native Solaris (2.8) syslog facility? That is, I'd like something like /var/adm/messages for localhost messages And then /var/adm/messages.host1 /var/adm/messages.host2 Or /var/adm/host1/messages /var/adm/host2/messages For messages from the other (client) machines. Can I do this? I can't see a way in the documentation, the manpages, or anywhere I've googled for. Do I need to install a replacement for syslog? If syslog-ng, for example, can do this, then I'll give it a try! Thanks in advance and all that, Andy -- Andrew F.
