No obvious solution so far. Most likely culprit seems to be long usb cables and/or bad usb connectors somewhere. David Foster suggested : If you need longer runs you can use a standard minidin-8 Sun keyboard/mouse (round 8-pin connector) and get a usb/minidin-8 converter from http://www.ultraspec.com . They have a $175 model for really long runs, and a cheaper one for shorter ones. which I'll look into. Thanks to Ronny Martin as well for, hmm, moral support.
