I found the problem...I was using the web interface to manage the exports and (for the working system) someone had apparently modified exportfs and added the backend interface but it didn't show up in the gui and I overlooked it everytime (until today)...you'd think I'd learn by now to never trust a gui. Added that interface for the other machines and all is once again happy.
