Hi all, Many Thanks for all your replies. They were most helpful. The problem turned out to be a hardware issue. One of the Ultrasparc III cpus in the server had a faulty FPU (Floating Point Unit). I installed the Cpu Diagnostic Monitor provided by Sun which detected and disabled the problem cpu.
