Thanks to those who suggested it might be related to an RPC service. Basically rpc.metamhd needs to be running in order for metatool to correctly report on disk status. This daemon can be started manually but is often invoked by inetd. I had turned off all inetd services on the system some time ago which led to the discordant results when launching metatool...
