SUMMARY: Inter-Domain Networking on a Sun Fire 15

We have access to a Sun 15k and we would like to implement Inter-domain
networking amongst the three existing domains. Our provider tells us it
can't be done. Our local VAR claims that it's straightforward. However, I
can find no "recent" documentation on the Sunsolve site that mentions
inter-domain networking and how to do it. In order to further muddy the
water, some documentation from 2002 explicitly states the 15k does not
support inter-domain networking. Any help would be appreciated, especially
any URL that discusses implementing it.

I'm in the 15k class right now and asked the instructor. He said it could
be done, but it is not a supported configuration. Just messing around I
tried to configure it on both the dman0 and eri0 internal interfaces and
wasn't able to communicate between domains.

If you have suggestions I could give them a whirl here in class.

Yes, there's a "MAN" network available to do it:

# uname -a
SunOS sf15k-a 5.8 Generic_108528-19 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-15000
# ifconfig -a
lo0: flags=1000849<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 8232 index 1
        inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff000000
dman0: flags=1008843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,PRIVATE,IPv4> mtu 1500
index
2
        inet 10.1.1.2 netmask ffffffe0 broadcast 10.1.1.31
        ether 0:0:be:a8:4:96
qfe0: flags=1000843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 3
        inet 10.16.30.118 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 10.16.30.255
        ether 0:0:be:a8:4:96

It's not the same as IDN on the E10K; it's just a 100Mbit network, I
believe,
unlike the centreplane-based high bandwidth network available on the
StarFire -
this had some problems associated with it though (a hardware crash on one
domain
would propagate down the IDN links and crash the other domains connected to
it)
so maybe that's why it's not available in the same form on F15K

I think you probably just need to plumb the interface up but I'm not a F15K
guru
- have a look at
http://docs.sun.com/source/816-3269-10/sms9install.html#CBHGHDCA for
starters.

In light of the above information, and the lack of support by Sun, we have
decided not to try to implement IDN. Thanks for the help.
