First of all Thanks to all that replied mlh@zipworld.com.au Andrew Hay Sandwich Maker" <adh@an.bradford.ma.us> Timothy Lorenc" <tim@load.com> Jay Lessert" <jayl@accelerant.net> Charles Gagnon" <charlesg@unixrealm.com> Heilke, Rainer" Rainer.Heilke@atcoitek.com Sean Berry" <berry@housebsd.org> We used twm and it seems to work. ( /usr/openwin/bin/twm -display cotton:1 & ) I had looked at VNC previously and had hoped not to use it, as it appears to be a security risk to me. Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it. --------- Original Question --------------- Previously we have Oracle 9ias version 9 release 2 on a Solaris 8 system and using Xvfb & olwm to keep the report server up and running. Now we need to install Oracle 9ias version 9 release 2 on a Solaris 9 system. The problem is that olwm has of course gone away in Solaris 9. So the question is does anyone know a replacement for olvm Below are the individual answers ########################################################### mlh@zipworld.com.au | Any old window manager would do. twm, for instance. ########################################################### "Sandwich Maker" <adh@an.bradford.ma.us> Andrew Hay there's a free olvwm floating around the web... think i saw it at x.org. the entire s8 openwin suite should work just fine under s9 - it's just a buncha apps after all... ########################################################### Timothy Lorenc" <tim@load.com> You can try using VNC. I wrote this up a while ago... http://docs.leading0.com/solaris/virtual.network.computing.setup.pdf ########################################################### Jay Lessert" <jayl@accelerant.net> You should be able to run dtwm (/usr/dt/bin/dtwm) anywhere you were running olwm before. A totally different window manager, of course, but I think you don't care about that for this application. This is the CDE window manager, and should be around past Solaris 10. ########################################################### Charles Gagnon" <charlesg@unixrealm.com> Are you sure you need a Window manager running? The Oracle report server should do find with just the X server running. If you do need a window manager, I would download and compile fvwm or olvwm. Should do the trick. http://www.fvwm.org/ http://www.plig.org/xwinman/olvwm.html ########################################################### Heilke, Rainer" Rainer.Heilke@atcoitek.com Do a search for dtautologin. That is what we used even under Sol8; it fires up CDE. Of course, in several years, CDE will go away as well, but by then, maybe Oracle will have clued in. VNC is another solution. We didn't go with it at the time because it was closed-source, and the situation with AT&T UK was still up in the air. Rainer Heilke ########################################################### Sean Berry" <berry@housebsd.org> twm should be available, and should be sufficient and low-overhead ===== Kathy Ange Virginia Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services Information Systems (804) 786-1340 Voice Mail (804) 786-2110 FAX __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
