Hi, My plan B is working well in practice for this purpose: 1) ufsdump every file system except root on Sparc20. 2) install Solaris 2.6 on Ultra60. 3) ufsrestore every file system except root of Sparc20 to Ultra60. 4) Selectively transfer /etc files from Sparc20 to Ultra60. This is the key step. 4) Upgrade Solaris from 2.6 to 8 on Ultra60. Casper made this point: You also want to "nuke" /etc/path_to_inst (change the content to a single line with): #path_to_inst_bootstrap_1 Most comrades suggested to install a fresh Solaris 8, then transfer applications and data on the old system to the new one. I think ?buying a new car? is not the best answer for the question ?how to rebuild the old car?. Sorry :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank list: "Casper Dik" <Casper.Dik@Sun.COM> "Colin Bigam" <colin.bigam@west.gecems.com> joe.fletcher@btconnect.com "Hendrik Visage" <hvisage@is.co.za> "Greene, Marco" <Marco.Greene@nexinnovations.com> "David Foster" <foster@dim.ucsd.edu> "ChinTu" <cp-sm@mil.sunysb.edu> "Karl Vogel" <vogelke@pobox.com> mike.salehi@kodak.com "Mitchell, John" <John.Mitchell@uk.experian.com> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Original Question: > Hello everyone, > > We are now planning to upgrade a production server > from combination Sparc20/Solaris 2.6 to combination > Ultra60/Solaris 8.
