I figured out the problem right after the email was sent off. I overlooked the fact the alias "net" may not be pointing to the gigabit interface. That was really stupid of me! It turned out the gigabit card has been aliased to "gem". So I did a boot gem - install and it worked. Thanks to Matthew and Adam for their quick responses.
