Thanks to everyone who contributed (Special thanks to Jay Lessert) 1. Sparc IIIi processors will be comparable (thanks to 1 MB L2 cache) to Sparc III, for applications which do not require intensive computation processing. For computation intensive applications like Oracle, Sparc III's external cache will come in handy. For Weblogic type of applicaiton servers, IIIi could give 85-100% of the performance of III. Actual benchmarking is required to make final decisions. Sun might relase sun benchmark comparisons this week. 2. Cache is *fuly* used. *everything* the applications touch, executables and data, are read into cache before being read by the processor, and written to the cache before being written to main memory. So unless process footprint is < 8MB, you're using it all. -Srini -----Original Message----- From: Srini Bala Sent: Tuesday, April 08, 2003 6:19 PM To: sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org Subject: RE: Ultra Sparc IIIi processors - comparison to Sparc III All, A related question would be : How could you find out the actual usage of the external cache on your CPUs? We have 280Rs with 2x900MHz processors (with 8MB external cache each) and I want to find out how much of the external cache is really getting used. Is it possible? Thanks again BTW, I have gotten couple of feedbacks on the first question and will eventually summarize the results. -Srini -----Original Message----- From: Srini Bala Sent: Tuesday, April 08, 2003 3:02 PM To: sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org Subject: Ultra Sparc IIIi processors - comparison to Sparc III All, The newly released Sparc IIIi processors have 1MB L2 cache (integrated) but no other external cache, compared to 8MB of external cache available in Sparc III processors (which have 512K L2 cache). Any idea how would this affect/improve performance? Thanks in advance... -Srini _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagers _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagers _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagersReceived on Tue Apr 15 17:18:57 2003
