Thanks to everyone who responded. The key suggestion was along the line "When sun networking tries to assign a netmask via /etc/netmasks, it will look for the LONGEST POSSIBLE match and then assign the corresponding mask." And thanks to the suggestion from Darren Dunham <ddunham@taos.com> I was even able to test it online. ifconfig ce0 unplumb ifconfig ce0 plumb ifconfig ce0 inet `cat /etc/hostname.ce0` netmask + broadcast + Then did a "ifconfig ce0" and verified that the netmask and broadcast address were correct.
