Additional userful information thanks to Greg Donkin -----Original Message----- From: Donkin, Greg [mailto:greg.donkin@roke.co.uk] Sent: Thursday, February 13, 2003 4:46 AM To: 'Vaidya, Maulik' Subject: RE: Summary; difference bt runleve s/S and 1 Maulik, Just a note FYI: Another difference between run level 1 and S is that if you change from a higher run level (usually 3) then users who are currently logged in will stay logged in at run level 1 (new logins are refused) but all user processes are terminated at run level s/S so all users are logged out. Both S/s and 1 are essentially the same single user adminstration states but the difference lies in the scenario wherein they are invoked. Commonly to perform system adminstration tasks on a running system, init 1 would be invoked, but if the system needs booting up from an external source for system adminstration purposes, then init s/S would be invoked. If the /etc/inittab file is bad, the system would boot up into Single user S/s run level, and not 1 because to change to level 1 it does require a correct /etc/inittab file Hope the summary is helpful -----Original Message----- From: Vaidya, Maulik [mailto:Maulik.Vaidya@icm.siemens.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 12, 2003 3:10 PM To: sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org Subject: difference bt runleve s/S and 1 Hello gurus, quick question... i consulted lots of documentations but the difference between runlevel s and 1(Solaris 8.0) is still not clear to me.... any explanations are very much appreciated TIA -Maulik _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagers _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagers _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagersReceived on Fri Feb 14 10:11:50 2003
