Thanks for the help Most pointed out that it is probe-ide, not probe-scsi. Here is the result: - X1 runs IDE, `probe-ide` or `pribe-ide-all` - After I setup the 2nd channel with an IDE CDROM drive `probe-ide` didn't see the CD drive. - Both IDE cables in the X1 are ATA100 cables. I switched the cable for the CD with a "regular" IDE cable. `probe-ide` detected the drive. - `boot /pci@1f,0/ide@d/cdrom@2,0:f` started read from CDROM However, it stopped when boot from 10/01 media with the follwing message: ok boot /pci@1f,0/ide@d/cdrom@2,0:f Boot device: /pci@1f,0/ide@d/cdrom@2,0:f File and args: SunOS Release 5.8 Version Generic_108528-11 64-bit Copyright 1983-2001 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved. (Can't load tod module) Program terminated ok Anyway, I used 02/02 media and it boots fine Chris Dupre also suggested that the CD-ROM has to support 512 byte blocks, not just the PC standard 2k block size.
