Thanks to all who replied so far. Received responses from John Julian, Yong
Yi, Srinivas Duddupudi and Doug Winter. Suggestions so far were to:

"use a Linux print server"
"use Ghostscript"
"usr lpadmin" ('lpadmin -p print -I any -s <Printer hostname>' a command
variation we hadn't tried on this end)
"use CUPS"

Of these, we're focucing on the lpadmin variation since neither CUPS nor Linux
are options at this point in time and my research into Ghostscript, though
incomplete, does not lead me to believe it's the solution.

Problem continues to be that Canon has Solaris drivers for only one of its
printers and nothing to support Solaris 2.7, 2.8 or 2.9.

Will report back on our progress when we've had a chance to run additional
tests.

Thanks, again, everyone.

Original post:

We've been called upon to support a fairly wide variety of Canon laserjet
printers under Solaris 2.6, 2.7, 2.8 and (soon) 2.9. What we've found is that
Canon has virtually no Unix drivers and zero support for what they do have.

The only Solaris drivers Canon offers at present is for their IR210 printer
and it's current only on Solaris versions 2.6 and below.

Needless to say, we've been hesitant to try this driver on new versions of
Solaris and have no reason to believe it'll work on Canon printers other than
the IR210.

The Canon printers we'll be working with are:

IR210
IR220
I330S
IR400N
IR440
IR2800

Though we had *some* success installing certain printers via HP's jetadmin
and
Solaris' native lpadmin, some printers weren't so cooperative.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone on the list that's had success with
Canon hardware under Solaris.

Thanks, all.
