Thanks to Andy Crichton, Brett Lanham, Kevin Buterbaugh, Christophe Dupre,
John Eisenschmidt for respionces and I appologize for the delay.

A couple of themes:

  22G s a big /var.
this is true, but I've had problems with all the systems I have for /var
running out of space and this server is going to use a lot of /var space, so
I'm going to allocate it while I have it. Also, it will be connected to a EMC
FC4700 SAN, so the internal drives (6x72G) are not going to be needed for
applications and data. Use it if you have it.

  Don't RAID5 a database.
Agreed. Parity uses enough CPU to slow things down. And If I don't show
performance improvement, I'm not likely to get more budget approved for
anything. RAID 1+0 for the database.

Use the available number of slices.
Maked ufsdump easier, filling / causes a system to hang, managing growth would
be easier. I used:
/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0 1233679 101570 1070426 9% /
/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s4 7516781 1130618 6310996 16% /usr
/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s5 17539178 8342565 9021222 49% /opt
/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s6 7566893 36790 7454435 1% /export
/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s7 20044777 126056 19718274 1% /var
with slice 1 for swap
     slice 2 left as backup
slice 3 for metadb for SDS

Drives 2 an 4 have been given to my DBA and drives 1,3 and 5 for the RAID
mirrors.

Q1 purchase of a pair fo SAN switches will connect this to my EMC FC4700 and
the database will move there then. Then I'll have 6x72G for the OS. =)

  There should be some swap.
Opinions varied, from RAM size to 2-4 times RAM. With the drive space
available now, I went with 2x RAM.

-
-Getting ready to load up solaris 9 on my new V880 with 2xCPU 4G mem and 6x72G
-HDDs to paly with. I plan on leaving 4 HDDs for my DBA to load Oracle later
-(SVM raid 5). I plan on mirroring my OS disk leaving me one 72G drive to play
-with. I remember reading that leaving a 100M slice at the beginning for SVM.
-I have read lately that Sun is leaning to fewer large slices instead of
-more smaller. So, my plan is:
-
-/svm	100m
-/	50G
-/var	22G
-
-Also, thoughts about making a smaller than twice mem size swap? I'm planning
-on 8G swap since I will have the disk space right now.
-
-Thanks, and I'll summarize
