Thanks to Lars Hecking, Steve Sandau, Tim Chapman, John Martinez, Vic Engle, algol, Nate Campi, Steve Anich, Peter Ondruska, Luc Suryo, & David Rhodes. The concensus is that there should be no effect with client-server communication (BIND 9 has been successfully used with Solaris 2.6 - 8 clients), but there may some problems with server to server communication. Generally those that responded had had no problems using BIND 9, but some others recommended just upgrading to the latest BIND 8, since BIND 9 is not in widespread use. Also mentioned was DJBDNS, which is a non BIND dns server.
