Here's the summary of what I found. As a general rule, the commandline is used much more than any GUI, and it seems the GUI interfaces are there more to compete with competitors products. GUI tools are occasionally used, such as Veritas, and probably some of the disk management tools. For the most part, however, administration is still done through the commandline. GUI TOOLS: Both Sun Management Center and Solaris Management Console are labeled as SMC. Solaris Management Console 2.0 is the latest release for Solaris 8, but Solaris 9 seems to have version 2.1. Solaris Management Console works, but general opinion is that it is klodgy, and the commandline works better. Sun Management Center is a newer product that is NOT free. This product looks to phase out the adminsuite product. The display problem with remote running the SMC has not been answered, My best guess is that it deals with the refresh rates on the panels. This is from personal experience writing java applications. A FAQ for the Solaris Management Console can be found here: http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/misc/smc20_faq.html JAVA: Upgrading to 1.4.1 should not help fix anything, and it shouldn't break anything either. I'll upgrade and test some things to confirm this. WEBSITES: http://www.sun.com/solutions/blueprints/online.html http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/ ________________________ Ok, I hope that's everything.
