Thanks to both Deborah Crocker adn Lee Trujillo for their helpful hints. It turns out that there is an entry in my ldif file (bindTimeOut) that is not defined on the server side. Removing that entry from the ldif file and re-running it worked. The log file showed more detailed error messages. It is always a good idea to check the log.
