Inundated!

Why? Why would I want to do such a crazy pointless thing as run M$ Windrows
on an LX50! Why would I want to do anything soooooo pointless. I don't know,
just wondering. Because its there I guess.

Lots of good responses, here's 7. Number 6 is from first hand experience.

Please stop now, Thanks, Richard.

1 ===============================
It turns out to be a maxdata platinum 1500RS (www.maxdata.com)
They say it supports linux(RedHat7.x), UNIX and MSWin 2000.

Best regards,

Dirk

2 ================================
It is GP hardware and will run most anything. I know various Linux
distributions are known to work on this as far as Winblows, not sure.
 Now why the hell would you want to do this?

>From the FAQ (http://www.sun.com/servers/entry/lx50/faq.html)
11. Can I run RedHat, SuSE, or other Linux distributions on the Sun LX50
server?

Yes, the Sun LX50 server is based on industry-standard hardware and will run
other Linux distributions.

Based on that, I'd guess Windows would work as well.

4 ================================

It's just an Intel server, no reason why it should not do both of
the below. You can download the LX50 specs in PDF format, it's
using ServerWorks chipset.

 Should be no problem once you have written the drivers. But what's the
point?

>From the official
FAQ(http://www.sun.com/servers/entry/lx50/faq.html#11):

"11. Can I run RedHat, SuSE, or other Linux distributions on the Sun
LX50 server?

Yes, the Sun LX50 server is based on industry-standard hardware and will
run other Linux distributions. "

Since it's "based on industry-standard hardware" it will likely run a
few OS:s from a major software company which name I prefer not to
mention. ;)

Having tried the machine myself in our lab I must say it a quite nice
machine. Especially the ability to run everything through a console,
even the BIOS is echoed to the console. The machine has two console
ports, one in the back and one in the front. Normally when installed in
a rack you connect the back port to a console server and if you plug in
a console in the front, it overrides the back one. Quite nice for the
Field Engineer.

AFAIK, it is a standard RedHat Server Distro that sun is rolling with
this box, and I would be amazed if the machine can't be re-purposed with
other X86 OS'es. I'm wondering myself if you can purchase a "stripped
down" LX50 and then upgrade it yourself with inexpensive generic parts ...

Hi,

Does anyone know if the LX50 will run Linux distributions which are not from
Sun?
Will it run other operating systems like, dare I say it, MS Windows 2000 or
XP?

Cheers,

Richard
