My sincerest thanks to everyone who responded particularly who shared
their scripts and config files. After tweaking the changes to configure
suggested by several people and recompiling it once again from scratch,
i could get past "zlib error" but not the "Can't find recent
OpenSSL..." error. The answer was to use an extra libs line called "-ldl" so the
trick here is,

./configure --with-libs="-ldl" --prefix=/usr/local/openssh
--with-ssl-dir=/usr/local/ssl (and any other options you may need and want).

I still can't comprehend how to find what "extra libs" a certain
application needs as i had to go through finding this "Extra magical lib"
line for configuring apache1.3.26 too.

Thanks,
