Many thanks to all who replied. Jeff Horwitz replied last night with the solution; gnutar. Apparently this tape was made with gnutar even though it is labeled as tar format. The error I received is common in this case since stock Solaris tar can't handle the file size. As of this morning there were many other replies awaiting me, most with the same solution.
