The response: It is only possible to use the fmthard way if the disks are exactly the same in geometry. It is possible to mirror unlike disks by creating the slices by hand. The slices just have to be larger than those they are mirroring. It was also suggested that I could redefine the geometry of the second disk (too scary for me).
