Thanks to all who responded and thank you for your patience. Here are the explanations: /bin & /lib (or any symlink for that matter) Depends on if you software follows symlinks or not. Most software for backups will know it's a symlink and back it up as just a file. Do not backup /proc /xfn /vol All of these should be backed up. /dev /devices /platform Thanks, Brett -----Original Message----- From: Brett Lanham [mailto:blanham@cleartrack.com] Sent: Monday, March 25, 2002 10:13 AM To: Sunmanagers (E-mail) Subject: solaris 8 backup stategy I am trying to come up with an exclude list for backups on a solaris 8 server that houses an oracle database. I'm not too worried about the oracle part or else I would be asking this question on another list. What I'm curious about are some of the "special" directories and if there is a need to back them up. I'm pretty sure I want to exclude stuff like: /bin/* because it is a link to /usr/bin and /usr is getting backed up /lib/* same except /usr/lib /cdrom /tmp /mnt not sure what's supposed to go here in solaris but we don't mount anything under it What I'm not sure about are directories like: /proc /dev /devices /platform /vol /xfn Do I need to include these as well in my backups. Thanks.
