Thanks to all.

The answer is the format used for burnign the cd, which was Joliet - win =
default. This should be ISO9660 compliant for long filenames to be =
readable on Suns. It is the Rockridge Extensions that need to be =
supported

  Have created an install CD on Win2k with logn file names, reads fine =
on a Win2k machine but when mounted on a Sol box -2.6 and 8 shows up as
  with shortname~1.ext etc
