All -

Many thanks to all that responded! I received a dozen responses in about an
hour and a half!
The general agreement was that very little computing power is required for a
Jumpstart server, and that I/O is the usual bottleneck, so make sure you
have at least a 100MBit network connection.

Most responses indicated they were using very small systems for Jumpstart,
(SPARC2's in a couple of cases!) and that an Ultra5 or Ultra10 should
certainly be sufficient, as long as it had enough disk to hold whatever
images I wanted to use, and a nice fast network to run it on. Several
respondents mentioned that if you planned to Jumpstart multiple machines at
once, additional memory for NFS caching would be beneficial.

Thanks again,

Subject: What size server for Jumpstart?

Hello, All -

What kind of horesepower should be planned for a jumpstart server?

I have about 2 dozen Sun servers, a mix of E450's, E3500's, and some U60's
and smaller, and would like to set up a Jumpstart server to use for
upgrades, probably use it as a central repository for patches as well.

What kind of hardware would you folks suggest for this beast?

I would probably purchase a new server for this purpose, and don't want to
specify more machine than is really needed for the job.

Thanks!
