I received a number of responses, most of which made me realize I
should've specified that this is in fact being done via the serial
console; there's no frame buffer in the system. The suggestion I
received which did work was to do a Full installation and prune packages
later; still not a completely satisfactory resolution, but at least the
server is up now.
Thanks to Damon Cassell, Jonathan Katza, and Hendrik Visage.

I'm trying to install Solaris 8 (original media release) on an E4000 with OBP 3.2.16. I have an attached SCSI diskpack for system storage; the system will later be connected to a disk array via FCAW, but I don't think I need to install the drivers yet as the cards haven't arrived.
The problem is that the Solaris 8 install can't seem to complete! I'm trying to install the core installation package plus a few extra packages (man pages, freeware shells, that sort of thing). I don't know if I'm missing a driver, or what, but after the software is installed for disk 1, when it reboots, the Java CLI client throws exceptions and halts. According to the error msg, I have to reboot the system, but doing so will of course just bring me right back. Deadline is approaching fast to get this system installed...
Any ideas? TIA, and I'll summarize to the list.
