Hello,

Asked if anyone had successfully copied the Solaris distribution
cdroms. Following advice copied it at 1X and now it works great.

Many Thanks,
Matt Goebel

No, I have tried this serveral times with 2.6 and 8. The issues seems to be
that consumer cd writers are not fast enough. You might trying slowing it
down to burning at 1x, but I think you would be opening up a coaster
factory.

Don't do it on a Windows box unless you know the software can properly
handle rock ridge extensions and iso9660 filesystems. We've run into
that problem here.

I've had to do burns like this on UNIX systems.

Matt,
I did a complete CD-CD copy using Adaptec EZ writer and it worked for me
(FOR SOLARIS 2.6)
I see no reason why it should work for Solaris 7

Check the speed at which you are recording. Should be 4X max. I've
successfully burned Solaris CD's on Intel boxes several times and the
recording speed is the only problem I ever had.

Yes I've done it and most times it worked - other times ???
I've not gone to the trouble of issolating the issues since software media kits
are dirt cheap nowadays.

If I remember, I did this for a 2.5.1 cd since It would be a bear to get a new
media kit if I lost the originals.

Are you using Rock Ridge extensions for your CD burn? You need those to get
the right CD format.

I realize that this will be of little direct help to you but I can
tell you that I have made bootable copies of sparc 2.6, 7 and 8 on
my powermac 8600 with MacOS 8.1 and Adaptec Toast 3.5.7 so it can
be done. I know that Adaptec also makes a port of toast for
legacy windows systems. Also, have you tried to place your burner
on your Solaris system and use cdrecord??

good luck,

Jerry

I have successfully copied a SunOS disk. Set the burner to do a disk
at once burn and tell it to make a bit-for-bit copy of the disk.

Yes we always burn copies of Solaris CDs and only use the copies. We use
CDRWIN or CloneCD which make proper exact copies of CDs.

I have never tried to copy the Solaris CD on a Windoze box but I have
successfully copied more than one of them using a burner attached to
a Solaris machine. I don't have the procedures in front of me right
now but I believe there is something in the FAQ about doing this.

1) Make sure that the CDROM you are trying to boot from, can actually read
CDR or CDRW discs!!! This is ESPECIALLY true for 1x speed CDROMs!!!

2) Done it without out trouble (That's excluding point (1) above ;^) with
Adaptec's Easy CD creator on Winblows.
I'm also sure I've made images with dd (Both from Linux and fromSolaris)
whioch were then written by Window's Nero or Adaptec Easy CD creators...

I did once, 2.7. The software used was Winoncd
