out of curiosity, was it a perl process?
this has worked to wake up and kill some perl procs that were seemingly hosed,
as you describe.
/usr/proc/bin/pldd PID
not really sure why or how it works, other than it lists the dynamic libraries
associated with a certain process. see man proc (look for pldd in this page).
