Hi, thank you to the two people who looked at my problem and sent responses
so quickly.
I discovered that by checking the route taken that it was sending data out
the wrong gateway. I then re-checked the subnet mask on the OTHER hme
port, and it was wrong!
fix this, problem solved.

A couple of things I see:
1. You might want to put the hostname of the hme1 interface into the
/etc/hosts
file. I'm not sure this will fix the problem but it will clean things up a
bit.
2. ** Your route command does specify a hop count. I'm not sure what the
default
is if you leave it off but I also specify the hop count. Usually this hop
count
is 1 but that depends on your network layout. I would redo the route
command
with the proper hop count.
Furthermore, if the hop is to be different than one you will need to make
modifications so that during the next reboot it is set correctly.
