Thanks to the list and other sources, I have it working. Here is the
original problem.
To backup an NFS system (from a Network Appliances filer) to a local
tape drive, which command is better, for one, and for another, why was I
getting error messages of permission denied etc.?

So I figured out I had to log into the network appliances box and then
issue a remote dump command as such:
dump 0fb xxxA:/dev/rmt/0cb 63 /xxxB/Homes/fido
where xxxA is the Solaris box with the tape drive, xxxB is the Network
Appliance filer with the homes.
