SUMMARY: GBIC Part numbers - (was E3500 fiber channel disk going bad?)

Dear sun managers,
This is a really, really late summary because when I asked the question,
the company I worked for went out of business just before I could
summarize on this issue regarding the disks randomly going offline, and
then online over and over, which resulted in lots of timeout errors.

Several people replied, many of who I can't remember, with many possible
solutions, but what cured my problems was the reply included below.

There's a couple of notes, though about this reply. Below it states that
you have to get rid of certain vixel corporation gbics (the listed
part numbers below). This is true, although the statement that it is
vixel gbics from before Nov 1998 that cause the problem is wrong becase I
had both gbics that were from after Nov 1998 (gbics on the good list), and
some that were from before (gbics on the bad list), and
both seemed troublesome; same revision too. The final solution was indeed
to replace the gbics with proven-working ones from either vixel or ibm.

I thank all the people who took the time to reply, and I apologize it has
taken me this long to get a summary together.

Subject: SUMMARY: GBIC Part numbers - IBM & Vixel

I got a few replies on this, but the following
message from Lynne Regazzaini <lynne@east.sun.com>
says it all: Thanks a lot Lynne!

>From what I can tell, the part number 6731A translates into
both the Vixel and the IBM-- PN 370-3975-03.

IBM 21H9870
Vixel 00651050-70
VCSEL Laser
830-870 nm

Here is the Breakdown of Good Vs Bad GBIC's

Part Number Manufacture Description Status

370-2303-02 VIXEL CD Lazer REPLACE
370-2303-02 IBM CD Lazer GOOD
370-3975-01 IBM CD Lazer GOOD
370-2303-03 VIXEL Vertical Cavity Lazer GOOD
370-2303-03 IBM Vertical Cavity Lazer GOOD

IBM GBIC's can be Identified by the Wire Handle.

Vixel GBIC's must be pulled out and checked for the -03 rev of the part
number.

---

If you have Vixel 02REV50, REPLACE IT!! Its bad. Vixel's 03REV50 GBICs are good. All IBM GBICs are good.
