Thanks everyone!

The people who said I have bad disks are wrong! But it wasn't a
fair game for you because after I posted, I unplugged the CD-ROM
which is by itself and tested the individual drives and they were
fine.

I went through 3 IDE cables and they didn't work either. One
respondent said the Ultra 5 only support 1 drive which made me
worried but he added that it's just a physical limitation, ie.
no room to add the second one. But there's room on top of the
floppy drive.

Most responds said "probe-ide"...I know, I know...Since the day
I was born, I was taught to "probe-scsi"...Two problems: probe-ide
was not listed on the help menu, and because I assumed SUN isn't
up to date with technology so "they couldn't have added something
similar to "probe-ide" there. Anyways, I routinely read the
hardware manuals on new systems from end to end but haven't
caught up to the command yet.

The reason I cycled through 3 cables because I today I felt like
being fooled. I am very good at throwing out parts thinking
they're bad (I take these "bad" parts from the PC guys and make
them work =) ) but I thought "could it be that I have 2 bad IDE
cables?"

Then at some point, the thought entered my mind that one of these
drives are not ATA compliant or the ATA compliance functions
aren't working. That helped me solve the problem! I took the
only jumper from one drive so it becomes slave and put two on
the other, indicating it's a master w/ non ATA compliant slave.
It worked! =)

I'm not lying. These drives have ATA written all over them. I
will prove to you by writing down the model numbers here...

1st drive: Baracuda ATA II, ST39111A; 2nd drive: Bara...ATA,
ST39120A, both are 9.1 GB drives.

Hmmm...maybe ATA II doesn't like ATA ha!

The majority "probe-ide respondents" helped me a lot because I
was able to cycle through various test cases quicker rather than
boot up the cdrom in single user mode and do a 'format'...or look
at /dev/dsk...

Thank you again and have a good weekend!

Chan

Subject: "No Disks Found" --- Urgent!

Hi admins:

I just got a new Ultra 5 with an IDE CD-ROM and a couple of
9GB ATA disks. I tried probe-scsi and found no disks at all.
I tried various schemes including single master disk, two
disks in cable select mode, and two disks in master/slave
mode. No luck. This is a brand new system, 3.25 PROM I think.

Any help? I think I'll try the second IDE channel with the
CD and one disk in slave/master mode.

Your help needed and appreciated.

Chan
