Subject: Performance comparisons of GCC vs. SPARCompiler?
I have several users benchmarking performance between Intel/Linux and
SPARC/Solaris. They tend to use gcc for all compiling on both the Linux
and the Sun systems.
To make the comparisons more fair I think they need to compile with Sun's
compilers on the Sun systems (assuming that Sun would know best how to
optimize for SPARC). I tried to find some benchmark comparison data
between gcc-compiled and SPARCompiler-compiled executables, but I couldn't
find any. Has anyone done this, or know where I might find this data?

Check out this (.pdf) whitepaper on the subject:

I used to have some urls, but most of them are pretty dated. I know
that there was a BIG improvement in gcc results when they went to
the haifa compiler (post 2.8, if I remember correctly). Supposedly,
workshop 6 has even more improvements in optimization for the ultrasparcs,
but haven't shelled out the bucks for it yet. The last time I checked,
the SUN C compiler version 4 produced output about that of the current
gcc (2.95.2) for most the the stuff I looked at (gzip, raytracing...).
One would presume that WS 5/6 would be faster.
If you want to just try it out, you can always download the workshop
compilers and try it to compare.

can't think of anywhere, but I think you can get a 30 day trial
license for the SunPro compilers.
Then just be sure to use the "optimise for this platform" switch
and build on the same type of system as you're running the test on.

I read and article about this, on the sun web pages, but I can't remember
the URL. But a search on their page should find it. We have some
experience concerning g77 and f77 compilers, and the sun f77 compilers
produce very fast code compared to the Gnu Fortran. We havent compared gcc
and the sun c compiler but I would guess that the Sun compilers are much
more optimized on Sparc architecture.
