THe resounding answers ahve been that it is dependent on the number of
inodes on a filesystem - but I believe that this a misinterpretation of
the question.
I was not looking for the limit of the number of files on an FS, but on
the number of files in a directory. Two answers receved that helped:
>From Arthur Darren Dunham:
- facet of the way UFS stores directory info with btrees. The actaul info
I can't summarize with any respect to Mr. Dunham until I've read more.
>From gabriel rosenkoetter:
- POints out that directory files grow dynamically, and therefore the
file size limitation should be the theoretical restraint. (2 gigs on old
solaris, 16T (WOW big dir) on new solaris)
Thanks to everyone who responded to this somewhat inane question!
