All,
Is this "safe" in the sense that the machine will be
unaffected if the serial line drops the connection
or sends breaks?
Do you have to do something special with the
serial line wiring to make sure that output to the
console doesn't clog up (dtr/cts) the sending process?
e.g. syslog
Does this allow the equivalent of a STOP-A
through the serial interface? A ctrl-break perhaps?
Is this key definable?
These were all issues last time I investigated this
and to solve them they need special wiring
and an expensive kernel patch from Sun Integration
services.
I would _really_ love to hook all my Suns to
a terminal server or each others serial port even.

in the middle of the day to resuscitate a hung
e450 yesterday.

Subject: SUMMARY: forcing output to serial port A
Thanks to all that replied. My original question was
"Managers,
Is there anyway to force output to the serial port of a Sun
box even if the keyboard is plugged in?"
I received two different solutions:
1. Baiju C. Karedan wrote,
"Hold STOP +F keys pressed and switch on the system . Hold it for 10
to 20 second . This will force the output and input to ttya. Or you can set
output-device to ttya at OK prompt using setenv command."
2. All others (whose names are listed below) gave the solution printed
below the list of names.

At the boot prom level:
ok setenv output-device ttya
ok input-device ttya
ok reset
At the os level, as root:
# eeprom output-device=ttya
# eeprom input-device=ttya
# init 6
