Got tons of replies. Too many to name individually. Thanks guys.
Unanimous decision : boot single-user from cdrom, mount the disk device, copy minimal
/etc/passwd from cdrom, boot and restore from backup.
Solution implemented : exactly as above.
Irony : Learnt later that someone else had a root window open while all this was taking
place :-)
How it hapened : Too embarassing to delve into that.
