Tanks to david.tansley that suggested I use "tput"

I use Reflections as a ANSI Telnet session. Set my TERM to at386. Now U
can use tput setab {Set Background} 1 {Red} or tput setaf 7 {Foreground
white}

U can use infocmp to see it your terminfo supports this feature.

You could try tput, certainly the GNU tput is a all singing and dancing
app.
