As I said, it was an easy question that stumped me. I actually muddled
through it between the time my email made the list and the time it took to
write a summary.
The answer is to place it in the .dtprofile for root. This makes sense
because of the default root settings Solaris has. If you're installing off
of a graphics terminal, you will only be logging in at the console, so it
needs a .dtprofile. If you're logging in remotely, you'll be su-ing in (by
default, until you change the /etc/default/login), which will have your own
environment variables.
Sorry for taking up your bandwidth before resolving it myself. :)

Original question:
Folks,
I know this is a simple question which is just baffling me, but I need some
help on this. I have a system running Solaris 7 (SPARC) which we're trying
to install one of our home-grown applications on. It needs a list of
environment variables added to its .login or .profile. This would be very
simple if we were running it as a different user other than root.
The problem is they want to run it as root. I have not been able to find a
.profile for root anywhere on the system. When I've tried to create one, it
will change the desktop from CDE to Open Windows, but the changes won't
take.
I know that it is possible to add the environment variables for root
somewhere, but I am just stumped. If someone can aim me in the right
direction, I'd appreciate it.
