this is on an ultra 2 under solaris 2.6. I searched the archives and have
no found this question - my solaris box thinks it has a cdrom mounted, but
I can't unmount it since it's not in /etc/mnttab. if I do a listing of
/cdrom, I get the following:

srvr2:bkain% ls -latR | more
.:
total 16
drwxr-xr-x 3 root nobody 512 Feb 26 1999 ..
drwxr-xr-x 8 root nobody 512 Feb 19 1999 .
drwxr-xr-x 2 root nobody 512 Feb 19 1999 s0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root nobody 512 Feb 19 1999 s1

./s0:
total 4
drwxr-xr-x 2 root nobody 512 Feb 19 1999 .
drwxr-xr-x 8 root nobody 512 Feb 19 1999 ..

I can't mount anything else onto /cdrom, can't umount it, can't do much of
anything with it. I've done both a reboot and a reboot -r. help please!

the answer I needed was just to remove the directory of /cdrom, pop in a
new cdrom, and I could mount it just fine. thanks to zac@agorics.com for
this hint.

I've included the rest, in case it will help someone else.

Kevin @Joltin.com suggested popping the cd by hand (I had done this and it
didn't help) and that vold often gets confused on itself

williams116@llnl.gov suggested shutting off volmgmt in /etc/init.d

John.T.Nguyen@trw.com suggested I read this "
http://www.wins.uva.nl/pub/solaris/solaris2.html"

weekleyj@inlink.com suggested I use showmount -e to see if it's is being
exported

It sound like you are running vold, check using the following:-

happy.domain.com > pkginfo | grep SUNWvol
system SUNWvolg Volume Management Graphical User Interface
system SUNWvolr Volume Management, (Root)
system SUNWvolu Volume Management, (Usr)
happy.domain.com >

If this returns output above you are running vold. This is a daemon
which polls the CD drive and when a CD is inserted it automatically
mounts it within the /cdrom hierarchy, meaning users do not have to
get root to mount CD's on their workstation, for obvious reasons it is
not a good idea to run it on servers.

If it is running and you want to use the CD conventionally you can
temporarily turn it off using:-

/etc/init.d/volmgt stop

You can permanently remove it by:-

pkgrm SUNWvolg SUNWvolr SUNWvolu

Hope this helps,

Ken.

daniel_lee@asia.com suggested the stick a paperclip in there trick

johnb@soliton.com suggested I use fuser to see if anyone is in the
directory
