Dear All,
Thanks very much to the four people who helped me with my problem with
pkgrm. (Casper Dik, Val, Scott Link, and someone calling themselves
Sun System Admin)
Scott and Casper hit the nail on the head by saying that my file
/var/sadm/install/contents was corrupted. Somehow, a lot of 'b in'
character sequences had been inseted into the lines. So the second
field, which usually says just 'f', had turned into 'b inf' instead.
Following the filenames reported when I tried to pkgrm SUNWss allowed
me to fix the problems, though it took a while, as my contents file had
over 32000 lines in it. Other problems were also noticed, and I had to
delete a few lines which appeared more corrupted.
However, I now have a file which will allow pkgadd and pkgrm to
function, which is a huge advantage. Since my mending of the file could
lead to a file being deleted which is needed by another package, I
suppose I ought to plan an OS re-install at some point, but I'm really
not keen on this, as it takes a while. In any case, the machine is only
my desktop machine, so it's not critical.
Thanks very much to those who helped.
Matthew.
